Our Sixth Day in England
Tuesday, April 4th
Our big adventure today was to try to get to the Temple Mead Train Station for train schedules and information.  We also hoped to get to the local bus company for their information.  Done!

Bruce was quite anxious to get on line so that he could collect his email because he still has consulting business to take care of.  He found he could get on line here at the flat.  There are at least a half a dozen wireless stations broadcasting in the neighborhood and one of them is unsecured.  My computer found the same site as Bruce but for some reason, I couldn't get on.  I was able to get our email messages on his computer from the Yahoo site.  This problem will go away as soon as the telephone is installed.  Working on that problem.

Started out climbing the hill to Queen's Road to go to Barclays again.  Our account is established but we don't have our checks and ATM card and there was no money in the account.  In talking with the banker on Friday we agreed that the best way to transfer money from our Bank of America account to the Barclay's account without paying fees was to use the Barclay's ATM (for free and with the best rate of exchange available) and then deposit the cash in the Barclay's bank.  In England you can't deposit money in an ATM, so we have to carry the money into the bank to deposit it.  We are limited to £400/day (£300 per transaction), so it may take a couple of days to transfer a reasonable amount.

Bruce and Jerry stopped at a Borders and Starbucks (one store) to see if Jerry's computer would work on their Internet access. Meanwhile, Nancy and Pam checked out the big grocery store next door.  At least the girls were successful.  Jerry is still unable to download to our website.

From Starbucks we rolled down the hill to the main Tourist Center's Information Booth near the waterfront to get information on the buses and local sights.  Mostly what we ended up getting was information on how to get to the next information booth in the middle of town that had information on the buses and local sights. Did that.  And, had lunch at a Subway.

Our next goal was the train station (Temple Mead) for information on the trains.  We knew from the maps where we were going but kept getting distracted by interesting diversions and then lost.  It was a good thing that we were carrying a map.  We finally found the train station and got enough literature to supply bedtime reading for the next month.  Then we walked home - about a mile and a half.

We had decided to try another local pub for dinner.  It smelled so smoky that we didn't want to stay and try their food. So, instead we went down the street and got fish and chips from a "walk-away" and went home for dinner.  Will keep trying to find a "local" pub for us to enjoy
Jerry continues to try to reach the phone company so we can get a phone installed, to no avail.  Tomorrow's main focus will be to get a person at the phone company to assign an install time for the phone.  Still don't know if we have to buy a phone or if it comes with the service.

The landlady will be coming by tomorrow (Thurs) afternoon as we still have some questions for her.  Her husband said he thought they had a TV we could use and a pay-as-you-go mobile phone. We'll find that out tomorrow.
